A comparison of the Fiberglass (FG) and Carbon technologies of the GONG V3 foils.

1. Overview of the Perf Series, Team Series, and Pro Team Series

We offer two key technologies for our GONG V3 foils: fiberglass (FG) and carbon.

Our new Perf Series in FG features the X-Over, Ascent, Curve H, Fluid H, and Trail foils. These fiberglass wings are made using the same technology as the carbon ones, but with a different material. The Curve H and Fluid H are also available in the Team Series, which is made entirely of carbon, just like the Pro Team Series. The FG ranges are fully fiberglass and offer a more accessible option, while our carbon ranges are for those seeking ultimate performance.

2. Dynamism and Weight Differences

The fiberglass (FG) wings are slightly less responsive than carbon ones. Their recovery to the initial shape is a bit slower, impacting the liveliness and instantaneity of underfoot pressure, particularly when exiting turns or applying pressure upwind. On the other hand, they handle impacts much better, such as hitting a rock, which makes them particularly durable for heavy use in freeride or surf foiling.

To achieve the required rigidity, additional layers of fiberglass are added. This results in FG wings being about 10% heavier than their carbon counterparts. Although the weight difference is minimal, it can be noticeable for advanced riders who prioritize maximum lightness.

3. Similar rigidity but different program

When it comes to rigidity, both technologies are very close, with almost no noticeable flex in either. However, FG wings are not designed for extreme jumps. The forces involved in freestyle or big air require the enhanced durability of carbon, which is achieved with a greater amount of material. Nonetheless, for freeride wing foiling, or surf foiling, FG wings are fully durable and perfectly suited for these activities.

4. Cost and advantages of FiberGlass technology

The cost reduction of FG wings comes solely from the material price. The biaxial, unidirectional, and 3K fiberglass we use is premium, pre-impregnated, and engineered to meet the demands of foil use. It is still 3 to 4 times less expensive than carbon of the same quality. However, the labor, molds, and manufacturing processes are the same for both FG and carbon technologies. The manufacturing time is even slightly longer for FG, as extra layers are required to achieve the desired rigidity.

The finish is faster for FG as the wings are painted black, which makes the process easier, unlike clear carbon, which requires extreme aesthetic precision and more meticulous work.

5. Usage and profiles define the technology

The choice between carbon or fiberglass depends on the thickness and shape of each wing's profile. Some thicker wings, such as the X-Over, Ascent, Curve, Fluid, and Trail, can be made from FG without compromising performance. However, wings from the Pro Team Series, such as the Ypra – Race, Slalom, and Surf, are extremely thin (up to 30% thinner) and require carbon to achieve the required stiffness.

Certain programs, such as the Ypra Surf-Freestyle, also require carbon construction despite their relative thickness to ensure full strength during pops and extreme flexions upon landing.

6. Durability and repairability

One of the key benefits of GONG foils, whether made of FG or carbon, is that they are completely repairable. Built with a substantial amount of material, they enable robust and lasting repairs, unlike ultra-light and delicate products. With proper maintenance, these wings will continue to perform perfectly for years to come.

And all the aluminum parts, often referred to as "consumables" due to corrosion, are sold at very affordable prices (often 4 times cheaper than competitors) to make replacement easy and ensure the safety and proper condition of your foil.

7. Performances and sensations

Both FG and carbon wings offer similar performance but with distinct sensations. FG wings are slightly less responsive, providing a smoother and more forgiving ride. In contrast, carbon wings are the pinnacle of performance, with a dynamism and lightness that pros can instantly feel underfoot. Carbon transmits more power through the legs on turns or upwind pressure, ideal for riders who seek maximum responsiveness.

8. Conclusion: Technologies for every style of riding

The FG foils from the Perf Series provide an accessible and durable alternative for riders who want to enjoy freeride or surf foil sessions, offering a fun and forgiving product. The carbon Team Series versions are designed for those seeking maximum performance, with optimized dynamism and lightweight. Finally, the Pro Team Series wings are built for competitors and highly demanding riders who require very thin profiles to achieve extreme performance.

At GONG, the choice of materials is not just a marketing strategy, but a technical and mechanical necessity. Each range is designed to meet the specific needs of each rider while ensuring exceptional quality and repairability.
